IAEA DG States That 12% of the World's Electricity Is Produced From Nuclear Energy

DUBAI: Rafael Mariano Grossi, the director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said that nuclear energy currently accounts for about 12% of the world's electricity generation.

Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) during the World Governments Summit (WGS), Grossi emphasized continued efforts to raise this percentage to twenty to twenty-five percent over the course of the next twenty years, thereby establishing nuclear energy as a steady and controlled part of the energy mix.

He stated that there is a growing level of commitment in the sector and mentioned that the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) marked a significant advancement in the nuclear industry by validating commitments and quickening the pace at which nuclear energy is being used in conjunction with renewable sources.

He pointed out that more than 20 nations had committed to tripling their current nuclear capability.

In addition, he expressed appreciation for the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) leading role in the nuclear energy industry, highlighting its importance as a regional leader and a primary force behind the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Grossi emphasized how the UAE's partnership with the IAEA has allowed it to quickly create vital capacities and institutional frameworks.

With plans to increase this capacity even further, nuclear energy currently accounts for 25% of the nation's total energy consumption.

He stated, "I see a promising future marked by increased use of nuclear energy, not only in the United Arab Emirates but also in Saudi Arabia and the Arab Republic of Egypt."

Furthermore, Grossi emphasized the significance of events such as WGS in evaluating worldwide issues and determining future tactics. - WAM Bernama.
